Feel Better

The Social App for young cancer patients

Expired on
12 Jan 2017

Cancer is not just something concerning with adults. Do you know about the 1,000 teenagers falling ill with cancer every year in Italy ? These young patients face illness in a completely different way from an adult or a child. It means facing a big new challenge that often confuses and scares them in a phase of growth full of uncertainties. It means having to deal, maybe for the first time , with hospitals, medical staff, incomprehensible terms, but also anxieties, doubts, fears and loss of hope.

Our Association has been supporting young patients hospitalized in the pediatric hospital Meyer in Florence for 30 years, since then it is committed to facilitate their daily lives in the complete respect of their autonomy trying to help them to keep, as much as possible, their usual habits and the contact with friends.

In 2014, thanks to the help of three students of Bocconi’s CERGAS Research Institute (Benedetta Vezzelli, Pier Giorgio Bianchi, Marco Cesare Solinas) we could develope the idea of making an App for teenagers with cancer.

This project has stemmed from the needs to give to young cancer patients an innovative tool through which deal with their care pathway with more confidence and awareness. Shortly, we wished to give something that would make them to Feel Better.

Feel Better is thought as a "discovery game" for PC, tablets and smartphones that will help young people acquire interactively useful information to tackle their disease day by day, having fun and learning how to manage their fears about something they don’t know.

There will be useful information on the most frequent problems regarding nutrition, physical appearance, sport, school, relationships with others and ... health. With easy explanations and user friendly graphics. To better understand how to behave, how to take care of themselves and, above all, feel better.

And more: Feel Better will put them in touch with each other in a virtual environment that will foster the exchange of experiences and favor meeting. To never feel alone.

Who's behind the project

Noi per Voi is a Parent Association fighting against child leukaemias and tumours. The Association was founded in 1986 and recognized as a Non Profit Organization in 1998. The statutory main objectives are:

  • the improvement in the care and assistance offered to young patients affected by hematological and oncological conditions
  • the promotion and support of scientific researches
  • to provide assistance to the families of the paediatric oncology patients

Noi per Voi is based in Florence and is active in the local area, but also cooperates internationally in a close partnership with the Meyer teaching hospital. The Association has always paid great attention to the child's quality of life in hospital by providing constant support to families and by offering a psychological support service. Noi per Voi also promotes recreational activities such as art therapy, ludotherapy and ward clowns, within the Meyer Hospital.
