What is it about?

SoloCanto Association, with Laboratorio Opera project, wants to produce and share Contemporary Opera. We usually organize training projects that involve children, teens, adults and young professionals. Our goal is to let people fall in love with Contemporary Opera and we believe that the way to do so is through active participation. We produce brief operas that we perform all around Milano. The singers are the young students of ours courses.

The Love Hurts project is addressed to young professional singers and musicians who haven't had the possibility to work with contemporary music. This is the first of several workshops that we intend to organize.

We are happy to start these workshops with the world première of Love Hurts made up of an international cast: the conductor and the librettist from UK, the composer from Italy and the singers from every corner of the world.

The first week young singers will work with Laura Catrani, an international and well known soprano skilled in contemporary opera, and the second week with the conductor James Ross.

They will also work extensively in the performing arts with Federica Santambrogio, stage director graduated from Academy of Teatro alla Scala.

How the funds will be used

The project is produced by Associazione Solocanto, with a cooperation of CCO (Center for Contemporary Opera of New York) who cover the travel expenses and fees for the conductor and David Kravitz.

The Piccolo Teatro Studio will be at our disposal thanks to the sponsorship from the City of Milano, but we need to pay the technicians as well as the production fees.

The young singers will come from all over the world and we would like to cover their travel expenses and accommodation. Of the 8 singers who participate in the workshop, the four best performers will receive a cash reward.

We will compensate Laura Catrani and the other excellent teachers who partake in the workshop.

The orchestral ensemble will be the Eutopia Ensemble, a professional team skilled in contemporary music. Young musicians from the best schools of music in Milan will be able to shadow the ensemble.

The performance will include set design and costumes and the world première will be the 25th of June at the Piccolo Teatro Studio in Milano.

Production copyright fees will need to be accounted for as well.

Who's behind the project?

"Laboratorio Opera" of Associazione Solocanto is the first organization that has invested in the cultivation of contemporary opera among Italian youth. Laboratorio Opera workshop for children had it's debut in June 2014 at the Piccolo Teatro of Milano.

Our team is composed of high level professionals.

During the last year we've added a group of high school students to the Laboratorio Opera family. Together we rehearse small contemperary operas and perform them in non-theatrical venues in Milano such as museums or train stations. Our resident composer is Matteo Manzitti, who brilliantly composes music that caters to the voices of our singers.

Being hosted at the prestigious Piccolo Teatro of Milano, Laboratorio Opera has ties with the Center of Contemporary Opera in New York. This year the CCO proposed the Love Hurts opera for our workshop with young professional singers.

We are sponsored by UniCredit and the City of Milano.

We love Contemporary Opera and we would like to perform it outside of the theatre and into our daily spaces.

Citing the composer John Eaton "Contemporary Opera does not need to be saved, it only needs to be done"

For the workshop we have already auditioned the young singers. We've kicked it off, now we look forward to start rehearsals!
