Re-building beauty

The Sarno River, historically linked to the lives and traditions of its inhabitants, represents the vital lymph of the areas it runs through. It was forgotten during the past decades, when unstructured urbanisation occurred, and its image has been subsequently linked to pollution and hydrogeological risk. Nonetheless, along its banks, natural environments and places of incredible beauty are still available. Among them there is a place called ‘Foce’ in the Sarno municipality. Even though the footpath located on the south side of the spring was repaired ten years ago, unfortunately, today the citizens can’t have access to a part of the area, also because of act of vandalism involving the footpath. As a consequence that area is currently abandoned and inhabitants can’t enjoy the River.

Our idea is not only to intervene and upgrade those banks of the Sarno river in the attempt to rediscover ‘its beauty’, but also to give a start to a process that involves the local community. We believe that this process is a way to activate a local synergy through a ‘community action’, involving inhabitants and institutions. We’d like that people recognizes themselves as a community, that they recognize their right to access the river, to walk on its banks, to enjoy the nature and protect it. We maintain that the process of taking care of our cities is a process that starts from taking care of our community, from small actions that bring us back to places and to rediscover places. We’d like to promote the idea that respecting nature and water is not based on prohibitions but on values. For this reason we want to ‘go back to the spring’

How?

In spite of past redevelopments, during the last years the river banks have been abandoned, even though people still go there. Today we want to start a bottom-up process, first involving the inhabitants of the area and then working on a larger scale promotion and participation action. We want that the citizens feel protagonists of this change, not only because they give a financial support to the project but also because they will take an active role during the realisation of the process and during the second phase: the maintenance of the area; guardians of the territory, who can supervise it and prevent from damages caused by vandalism and robbery. Our aim is to create an educational site for environmental education actions; to create a site for testing and realising ecological effective actions of protection of the river. We will also take into account that the site is part of the ‘A zone’ (reserves) introduced by the Regional Park Plan of the Sarno River.

Our proposal

The river banks

Accessibility and usability

The first action is the environmental upgrading of the access area and the maintenance of the vegetation, both of them necessary to access the river banks. The project is structured on two levels: the physical access and the improvement of the inhabitants’ perception that today consider the area as a deteriorated environment.

The path

Security and usability

The main objectives are to upgrade the footpath that today is almost disappeared, to place self-crafted benches and to realize special areasto improve the contact withwater. Furthermore, a safety rail will be placed at the slopeat the entrance and at the border of the existing pedestrian bridge.

Educational Path

Pilot projects and education site

We aim to combine vegetated stabilizing systems and filtering vegetated systems. The aim is to inform and diffuse practices to protect soil permeability or filtering systems for urban water.

The platform of memory

Upgrading of the stair and the platform

Currently there is a stair that allows users to access the platform but it is extremely deteriorated; we aim to repair it and the platform to have back an interesting sight on the river.

We are

Leonia Legambiente has worked for years to promote the cleaning up of the Sarno river. At the same time Leonia Legambiente has promoted the recognition of the value of the territory in which it operates; it is maintained that this territory is still a valuable naturalistic environment, also for the production of D.O.P. vegetables like the San Marzano tomatoes.

We have organized socio-environmental campaigns like Goletta del Sarno, an operation of information and monitoring to raise awareness of the ecological status of the river, and also to promote actions for safeguarding the natural-urban environment; Big Jump, a symbolic (and real) jump to save the river from the degradation due to the urbanization, following the European Rivers Networkintiative; Pummarola Day, an annual and open meeting to rediscover our tradition of tomato sauce production, as a symbol of the well-known agricultural products of the famous Campania Felix.

Leonia Legambiente Sarno Valley is a voluntary environmental association. Since 2010 we have intensified our commitment to active citizenship, especially in Sarno and Nocera Inferiore, both participating at the traditional campaign of Legambiente and through other specific initiatives.

In recent years we have expanded our interest and our efforts focusing on good agricultural practices, hydrogeological instability and pollution related to the Sarno River.
