The Associazione Premio Eleanor Worthington, based in the town of Urbino, has been promoting the culture of disability for the last seven years, to facilitate lowering barriers and support social inclusion. So far we have run prizes for art secondary schools of the whole region of Marche, and, more recently, parallel prizes for art students of British and Italian universities; altogether we have attributed prizes to over forty pieces of work.
This year we launch a new initiative. We take the lead from the United Nations, which since 1981 celebrate the international day of persons with disabilities,
With your help we shall organize a day rich in cultural events, freely open to everybody. Spaces involved include ISIA (Istituto Superiore Industrie Artistiche), the Sala del Maniscalco, the Nuova Luce cinema, and the Porta Santa Lucia trade center. The nearby town of Urbania will be involved as well.
Our initiative will set up a massive work of sensitization towards the theme of disability, with reference to various groups of people: young ones, who take part in the art competition; the trade center customers; film lovers; and the public willing to be involved with the workshops of ceramics and of poetry reading and dramatization.
The opening event is the presentation of an artistic competition on disability, which will take place in ISIA, via Santa Chiara, Urbino. The competition is run by the Associazione Premio Eleanor Worthington, and is open to students from British and Italian Universities. All techniques are admitted.
In the afternoon the sensorial sensitisation workshop “Creta Cieca” will be run, organized by the Associazione Amici della Ceramica, in their workshop in the Ducal Palace of Urbania, a town near Urbino. It is a ceramic workshop , which involves manipulation and creation of shapes with clay; people in situation of simulated disability will participate.
Throughout the day, in Urbino, films on art events related to disability will be shown, in the new Coop trade center, where a space is especially devoted to cultural events. We intend to continuously show films, during the whole of the trade center opening hours; films will deal with theatre, dances, artistic works, videos, where sensitivity towards disability is expressed with various artistic languages.
In the afternoon, in the Sala del Maniscalco in Urbino an interactive theatrical workshop will take place, with reading and dramatization of poetry (in the original language) on disability, with some live music. The audience, with disabled and not disabled people, will be invited to actively take part in some performances. Members of the Teatro dei Bottoni, Candelara (Pesaro) will animate the workshop. Some poems will be read by students of the university ”Carlo Bo” of Urbino, who are also members of CUST (Centro Universitario di Sperimentazione Teatrale). The musicians, already active in various cultural local events, will propose classical and popular music; some of them are members of the Cappella Musicale in Urbino.
In the evening, the film "Genitori", directed by Alberto Fasulo (2015), will be projected in the Cinema Nuova Luce, in the historical area of Urbino. The film is introduced by the film expert Riccardo Bernini, and professional experts in communication will be invited.
An integral part of the project, even though delayed in time, is the exhibition of all the works submitted to the Eleanor Worthington Prize, to be held in February 2016 in York, UK, at the New School House Gallery. The Gallery, which specializes in contemporary artcrafts, is located in a historic buiding in York, next to the Quilt museum and to the historical Black Swan pub.
The whole project concentrates on art and disability, therefore the rewards will be mainly works of art, in different shapes.
There will be postcards and small prints from the photographic studio Fotomoderna, active in Urbino since the 1950s.
There will be art books, on various artists and architectural works, some guide books of Urbino, some monographs, some proceedings of research conferences held locally, mostly about local artists and artefacts. Given the variety of books, not all rewards shall be identical, but shall be very comparable with one another. Some of the books are in English.
Rewards for generous contributors will consist in prints, numbered, and in a limited number of copies, especially made for this occasion and donated by the artist Carlo Migani.
Rewards for especially generous contributors will consist in the offer of hospitality in Urbino with board and lodging for two people, for December 2 and 3, 2015. This will allow our guests to take part in the various activities of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Alternatively, the rewards will consist in one work of art, produced and donated either by the artist Petra Bartels,or by Nunzia Invernizzi, or by Carlo Migani, or by Irene Podgornik.
All rewards will be rubber stamped, and signed by a member of the Associazione Premio Eleanor Worthington.
The funds we collect are necessary to finance all of this, which implies, among others, the following expenditures: prizes for the winners of the British-Italian art competition; setting up the prize giving event at ISIA in Urbino; the ceramic workshop; the show of poetry reading and dramatization, and music; setting up the film event; paying taxes on the public presentation of poetry and music; setting up the projections in the trade center; payments to the photographer, the film expert, the musicians, and the video designer. In addition, there are costs for the exhibition in the UK (travel, hiring of the art gallery, setting up of the exhibition); the exhibition will be mainly digital, and it will show films of the event, and works submitted for the artistic competition on disability, the presentation of which has taken place in ISIA.
Thank you in advance for your support!
