uCANcer is born with this objective: to give an adequate support structure to patients that have cancer, through the mapping and evaluation of medical facilities worldwide. The name uCANcer joins the word “cancer” with the words “you can”, encouraging the patients to believe that they can beat cancer. The idea of the project came in response to the "mHealth - Enhancing Cancer Support Care" contest, sponsored by the Helsinn Group in collaboration with SDA Bocconi University.
The project consists of realizing a web platform and a mobile application, with the objective of giving patients access to tools with which they can find the most suited facilities to their care needs.
The system for the evaluation of medical facilities adopted by uCANcer is based on the construction of an innovative cross evaluation model, which we have decided to call HCE (Healthcare Cross Evaluation).
The healthcare indicators which are taken into account offer an objective evaluation of the experience that medical facilities have in the treatment of specific types of cancer. The healthcare indicators include data such as number of admissions, number of treatments and an index on the scale of the complexity of the cases treated.
On the other hand, the patient evaluation is based on non-medical data, such as accessibility to the facility, waiting times, and friendliness and general courtesy of the personnel. This data is compiled by a customer satisfaction questionnaire studied by uCANcer.
The result of this research will guide the patient to a list of facilities - patients will then have 3 key figures at their disposal: the cross evaluation HCE, the evaluation of healthcare indexes for cancer, and finally the evaluation of individual patients.
The primary objective of uCANcer is therefore to help patients acquire the knowledge that they can beat cancer, choosing the right medical facilities which best suit the needs of every individual.
This is why we need your support, too.
1 - Development of a web platform and a mobile application (smartphones and tablets);
2 - The system for the evaluation of medical facilities based on the construction of an innovative cross evaluation model - healthcare indicators (derived from National Health Institute and Board of Health data) and non-health indicators (derived from the evaluation of invidual patients, compiled through a customer satisfaction questionnaire);
3 - Use of complex health indicators, both quantitative and qualitative, aimed to offer an objective evaluation of the experience that medical facilities have in the treatment of specific types of cancer.
As stated before, our main goal is to give an adequate support structure to patients that have cancer, through the mapping and evaluation of medical facilities worldwide.
Regarding the implementation of uCANcer, our goal is to launch the web platform and mobile application in January 2015. The application will be available in Italian and English, for Apple, Android and Windows systems. During 2015, the team is also willing to launch uCANcer in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Another future goal is to apply the uCANcer research and evaluation model (HCE) to neurology and cardiology, expanding the number of diseases treated by the applications managed from the startup company Innovation for Healthcare.
Project created by
