Pisa is my hometown. I grew up in there. I loved it. Sometimes I hated it. I was free there, but sometimes I felt like a prisoner. After all, every town originates this kind of idiosyncrasies. I decided to mingle all these clashing feelings and to use them as a springboard for a video project.
In 2008 I began recording, picking up materials and involving other people in my project. I wanted other people to tell the tale of “my own” Pisa, the place where I grew up. Through each one of them speaks a living part of the town: the most vital, artistic, indipendent one. My aim is to tell who are they now, what are they doing, what they want to say.
Through their stories I want to tell the life experience of someone who choose to create, to express himself, to pursue what he loves, to gain its own corner of freedom, even if this means sacrifice. Some of them affirmed themselves in the Italian panorama. I wondered if they could have had the same success if they were born in Milan, or in another big city. I couldn’t find an answer. Maybe you will.
Pisan Diaries is a small community, composed by the people I grew up with: writers, musicians, cartoonists, artists. My fellow travellers. I had the camera on my shoulder, and they had thier own instruments – guitars, felt pens, sticks, pens, amplifiers, keyboards. I asked them to stand in front of the camera and to say something about themselves, without any filter, in an intimate and personal way. They revealed themselves to me, but most of all, to you: Tuono Pettinato, Magdalene and Marco Malvaldi are the first three, you can already see their faces and hear their voices.
Pisan Diaries is an entirely DIY project, self produced by C-Frames Production (my film/video studio, my own small niche of freedom), in collaboration with some amazing people who helped me – and they still do it – in its realization. I’m into cinema since university, through the years I realized ducumentaries, videoclips, short films, urban portraits and soundtracks, playing live almost anywhere, with the bands I used to have.
It is a project coming from “the people”, and from “the people” it is looking for a support in order to be distributed. Through the Internet and the local networks, but also through bigger or smaller communities.
In a country like Italy, giving less and less visibility to people’s stories, which are instead really worth the telling, I wanted (and I’d still want) to find a personal “window”, to show you from there all that otherwise you could never know. I wanted to show you a real, true country.
Here are the previews of the works:
Trailer P.D. – Chap. 1: Tuono Pettinato (culture karateca and cartoonist) – http://www.vimeo.com/28882965
Preview P.D. – Chap. 2: Magdalene (post-hardcore/post-rock band) – http://www.vimeo.com/26940285
P.D. – Chap. 3: Marco Malvaldi (author of detective stories) – in production.
For the next three chapters I decided to make a step forward: the funds raised through Eppela will be used to cover the minimum production expenses (for the shooting, the editing, and the postproduction), but also to permit the transfers, the lettering and video composing processes. Higher the sum reached, higher will be the possibilities to plan the weirdest shootings, or postproduction tricks, able to tell with a greater amount of inspiration and creativity our main characters: a songwriter, a cartoonist/toys creator, and a rrrock band!
The project’s aim is to become a cross-media product, not only through the C-Frames Productions’ website and Vimeo platform, but also through a “real”, physical distribution: through tv channels, festivals, events and screenings in atypical situations, such as a brunch or an happy hour, during exhibitions, live concerts, performances of the artists involved in the project, and in public spaces, such as bookshops, coffee houses and clubs.
We thought that, as a thankyou for your kind support to our project, a present could have been nice. But we're not giving you common presents, they are special: comics, illustrations, and gadgets from two of our lovely (and 100% made in Pisa) testimonials for Pisan Diaries: Tuono Pettinato and Lucia 'Whena' Biagi. Tuono is a comics creator, author of strips appeared on XL, Zero, VICE, ANIMAls; his last graphic novel about the Italian hero Garibaldi came out for Rizzoli/Lizard. Lucia aka 'Whena', she is a comics creator too, author of different types of guides, recipe books and Pets, edited by Kappa Edizioni; she is also the creator of some crazy little monsters realized in any conceivable fabric, but also of design objects, crochet zombies, and various accessories (bags, caps, T-shirts).
For the ones who will invest at least 40€ in our project, there's an extra, an exclusive present for our supporters: the special DVD copy of Pisan Diaries vol.1, containing the first six chapters of the project!
Help us to keep on telling these wonderful stories, support Pisan Diaries! :)
