What is it about?
The project stems from the experience of the Coop. COGECSTRE of over 40 years in the conservation and management of Protected Areas: in fact, the first successful experiment of how jobs can be created with environmental conservation.
The main actor of the project is the Abruzzo region and, in particular, the Terre Vestine district.
The purpose of the fundraising is to expand the network of huts with a further 5 complete sets, in order to create a system, unique in Italy and among the very few in Europe, at disposal of nature photography lovers and professionals. The nature reserves have always been very advanced laboratories, both in the field of environmental research and teaching, and in technological application.
In the reserves, programmes for environmental education and responsible tourism are developed, renewable energy is used and produced, biological farming is carried out, local traditions are recovered, scientific culture is spread.
The reserves managed by the members of the Consortium are located in important wetland areas, such as the river belts, a resting place for birds. The project, with related visits and training courses, will allow children to spend a day understanding and experimenting proper nature management practices for the restoration of lost ecosystems balance.
It will be important to understand how a protected area, a place of constraints, can become f,or each person an incalculable heritage of rare beauty to be preserved and maintained, and where everyone will be the bearer of that extraordinary knowledge to be perpetuated for the conservation of nature.
The goal is to stimulate curiosity and motivation through the "Birdgardening" and the study of ecosystems, for a better approach to knowledge in order to acquire proper behavior for respecting nature.
How funds will be used
The success of the fundraising will make it possible to cover the costs of the expenses for the expansion of the network of huts and the construction of 5 complete sets. Specifically, each set consists of very high definition, live remote transmission cameras (2.7 GB), watering and feeding troughs with automatic water recycling system, with a photovoltaic-powered system.
Who's behind the project?
The COGECSTRE Cooperative was founded in Penne, Abruzzo, in 1980, for the management of sports and tourist centres and for ecological research. Since 1987 it has specialized in the environmental sector: - management of protected natural areas – laying out of projects for the conservation of endangered flora and fauna. Parallel to the management of protected natural areas, Cogecstre has developed a series of ecologically sustainable economic activities, in the agriculture, craftsmanship, tourism and services sectors. The Masseria dell'Oasi experiments the production and processing of biological products within a farm in the Penne Nature Reserve. The Laboratory of the Oasis includes a carpentry, a silk-screen and ceramic laboratory, where numerous handicraft products are made, designed both for the public and for the various activities of oases and reserves.
The production is flanked by a series of services in the field of nature tourism, environmental education, professional training, design and environmental planning. In 1987 the deep and proven knowledge of the territory led Cogecstre to acquire the management of the natural oasis of Lake Penne. The results of this activity, immediately evident, attracted the attention of various entities, thus favoring the management of new protected areas. The cooperative has launched the system of Abruzzo regional natural areas through the integrated management, for several years, of numerous reserves in the Abruzzo Region (Lake of Penne, Lake of Serranella, Maiella Orientale, Abetina di Rosello, Castel Cerreto, Valle dell'Orta, Parco territoriale dell'Annunziata) and has been collaborating for some time with numerous protected areas throughout Italy and in some European locations. In collaboration with the APRI Ambiente company, on behalf of the Abruzzo Region and the Municipality of Penne, it has drawn up the plan for the network of reserves as the fifth park of the Abruzzo Region. Scientific research has always been an inseparable component in Cogecstre's activity. The study of the naturalistic elements that characterize the different areas constitutes the prerequisite for a better management of the territory.
