Where we are

Tenuta La Viola is located on the gentle hills of Bertinoro, on the side facing the sea. The proximity of the Adriatic on one side and the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines on the other, create the unrepeatable conditions for a unique microclimate, caressed every day by light breezes.

The soil also boasts exceptional characteristics: it is clayey, rich in limestone and ancient marine sediments, such as shells and sand. This complex texture of the soil gives the wines minerality, color and good acidity which makes them so long-lived.

Bertinoro, in the heart of Romagna, is a small medieval village on top of a hill. From here you can see slopes, plains and the Adriatic sea. It is a land that has always been known for its particular vocation for the production of quality wines and for the hospitality of its inhabitants, but also for the infinite passion of its people for cooking, for engines and for art. Ferrari and Ducati, drivers like Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso, and artists of all time such as Giovanni Pascoli, Luciano Pavarotti and Federico Fellini are from this land.

How do we make wine

We have always believed in organic farming, which we have been practicing in a certified way since 1999. For this reason we do not use chemical insecticides in crops, preserving the health of people and the vines themselves, allowing each vineyard to maintain its natural balance, its intact aromas , the bright colors and the enveloping atmosphere of harmony.

For us, sustainability is a precious value for which we work to preserve natural resources for future generations and to seek the best methods to obtain the least possible impact on the environment. From 2018 we started biodynamic practices for the management of our vineyards. Fertilization, cultivation and breeding are carried out in ways that respect and promote the fertility and vitality of the soil and at the same time the typical qualities of plant and animal species.

For us, wine is tradition and passion that binds us inextricably to our land. We deeply believe that the history, experience, dedication and professionalism of the people who work it flow into the quality and character of the wines obtained from it, making them unique.

The wines selected: P.Honorii 2015 & 2016

A wine that tells the story of a territory rich in knowledge such as that of Romagna but also a wine synonymous with quality and excellence, which fully reflects the genuine values of tradition peasant: intensity of fruit, modulated extraction and a strong sense of balance that arises from the first vineyards of the company.

Its name hides a precise geographical and historical connotation: "Petra Honorii" was the name by which it was called Bertinoro during the Gothic Wars. With an intense ruby red color; the nose develops an intense concentration of red fruits, such as black currant, blackberry, and blueberry accompanied by plum jam. It closes with a vibrant minerality and pleasant spiciness.

Its balance is fine and impeccable, alternating pleasant freshness and the right amount of alcohol and softness.

P. HONORII 2016

Alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks at controlled temperature with repeated punching down for at least 21 days.

The evolution of the wine starts in large 30 hl barrels and then passes into 500 liter tonneaux for at least 12 months. Aging is at least 16 months in the bottle.

Project created by

Tenuta La Viola

The Gabellini family moved to Bertinoro from the Romagna hinterland and in 1962 bought the land with the Sangiovese and Albana vineyards at the time cultivated with saplings. Since then, they take care of this land to create great wines.

"Walking through our vineyards, you can breathe a timeless atmosphere, from which you can grasp the deep devotion of an entire family towards their land."

Stefano Gabellini
