Help rebuild the Ossaia dog shelter in Cortona
An S.O.S from the Ossaia Dog Shelter in Cortona
The Canile of Ossaia dog shelter, which has been serving the community of Cortona for 30 years, is in desperate need of renovation. Many of the buildings that house the dogs are run-down and need to be demolished and rebuilt. A major overhaul of this kind would improve the quality of life for the dogs that are housed in the shelter and make it easier to give them the care that they need. The association Etruria Animals Defendly, which runs the shelter, is in charge of the project and will make sure that the work is done in the shortest amount of time possible. However, as you can imagine, the costs of renovation are very high. For this reason, we have decided to start a fundraising campaign. All donations to this fund will be warmly welcome.
How funds will be used
Funds will be used to improve the safety of the environment and bring the shelter up to the highest standards. Plumbing and electrical systems will be overhauled. New kennels will be built so that our four-legged friends will be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Parts of the current structure, especially those fabricated out of reused and upcycled materials, are in need of repair. We will reconfigure the spaces used so that the dogs will be more comfortable. The land surrounding the shelter will also be replanted and beautified.
In short, we need funds for:
- replacing the existing fencing
- repairing the plumbing systems and hooking it up to the municipal water mains
- improving the electrical system
- landscaping the surrounding area
- upgrading the sewage system
- demolishing and removing old structures
Who's behind the project?
Stefania Bistarelli is the head of the Association Etruria Animals Defendly, which oversees the Ossaia shelter in Ossaia.
She has been working with dedication for the wellbeing of dogs for 20 years.
She started her career at the municipal dog shelter in Arezzo, where she was Assistant Manager for five years. In 2004 she came to the Ossaia Kennel in Cortona as Manager.
Her team is made up of a total of four people. The shelter also has the support of a local veterinarian and numerous local volunteers who donate their free time to the dogs.
Singer Jovanotti is a huge fan!
Every year in December, we receive a generous gift of food from Italian singer, Jovanotti, who is originally from Cortona.
7 Days a Week
We work hard to help abandoned dogs. 7 days a week, Stefania and team clean, feed, exercise, and care for them.Every day, people drop by to take them for walks. Every week, a group of English-speaking locals help with upkeep. Once a month, friends join us from near and far to take the dogs for a long walk in the countryside. We host dinners and take part in local activities to raise money for our shelter. Now you can be a part of the Ossaia dog shelter, too!
University of Georgia in Cortona & Ossaia dog shelter
A few weeks ago we had a visit from some of the students at the University of Georgia art program in Cortona. They took the dogs for a walk in the countryside and then brushed them and played with them at the shelter. A great time was had by all! A few days later, at an exhibit of their artwork, they had an art auction, the proceeds of which were donated to the Shelter. We're lucky to have such kind neighbors and look forward to their return next semester.
