What is it about?
J. & F. Duvignaud and J. Corbeau are three anthropologists who in the 1970s undertook a great inquiry into the dream-like dimension by interviewing more than 1000 people across France. Starting from their book “The bank of dreams”, we also found ourselves reflecting on the importance of the dream activity.
Sleep is not just rest, as we often mean it today. It is not just a peaceful digestion of our daily lives. Dreams are often inappropriate, they materialize our innermost thoughts. We believe that understanding how people relate to the dream activity is fundamental for analyzing the contemporary man. And we will bring the outcome of our research on this subject on the stage to share our discoveries.
We would like to do a show on the dreamlike activity of the Italian dreamer, taking as a reference the 4 stages of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. We will meet people of different ages, sex/gender and professions and ask them questions about their dream life reporting the old questions of J. & F. Duvignaud and J. Corbeau and making up new ones too. Thus we will create a new “Bank of dreams”.
Then eventually we will choose and stage the stories we collected. We will also ask the dreamers we meet to take part in the show as actors. We will create a show with them. We want to explore different municipalities in Italy, from the smallest to the largest, with the aim of creating a network between the theatrical production centers that will host the project. We will give a cross section of the specific dream society in which we will be working.
For this reason the project “The Bank of dreams” is structured as a residency with a final show in whick the concept is the same in every city, while the performance will be the result of the meetings and the investigation done in the specific places. Thus the event will be unique and unrepeatable every time.
Thanks to the National Theatre of Tuscany we tested our project in Scandicci, near Florence, in April 2019. In February and March 2020 two theatres in Milan will host it again: Campo Teatrale and Franco Parenti.
To continue our research we need your support.
How funds will be used
THE BANK OF DREAMS is a travelling social inclusion project with a ever changing performance at the end. The aim of the play is to investigate the world of the dreams throughout Italy; for each reality, city and theater that we will meet we will propose a different BANK OF DREAMS, inspired on the experiences of the locals and our interaction with them.
With your support, we will be able to continue and progress in the investigation in many other cities in Italy and bring the show in many different theatres. Your contribution will also help us to bear the costs of the show's replicas, i.e. the purchase of costumes and scenery, the pay for the technical workers, for the actors and the director.
This is a project with high aspirations, we need significant support!
What are our new neurosis? How are they affecting our relationships?
The characters of Domesticalchimia embody the answers to these questions. When we start a new project we gather our opinions and our studies on a new theme in which we are interested, then we collect interviews with people for helping us further explore the subject. After that the playwright, the sound designer and the choreographer, alongside the director and the actors, work to create a performance the most interactive with the audience as possible .
The DOMESTICALCHIMIA theater company was born in 2016 after years of collaboration in various projects between Francesca Merli (director), Camilla Mattiuzzo (playwright), Elena Boillat (performer and choreographer) and Federica Furlani (sound designer). The actors Laura Serena, Davide Pachera, Massimo Scola, Barbara Mattavelli and Zoe Pernici are collaborators of the company. In 2016 the company created Il Contouring Perfetto produced with the support of Emilia Romagna Teatro and Rami Residenze Artistiche, winner of the best show at the Avanguardie 20 30 Festival. In 2018 the company created the show A Classic Heterosexual Love Story produced by DOMESTICALCHIMIA with the support of Emilia Romagna Teatro and Armunia, winner of the Theatrical Mass Prize organized by Campo Teatrale and winner of the Opera Prima Festival Call for the category of new discoveries. With the project The bank of dreams, the company Domesticalchimia won the Mila Pieralli competition, a project of the Scandicci Theater Studio produced and promoted by the National Theater of Tuscany.

DOMESTICALCHIMIA "tells uncomfortable stories from the sofa". We want to talk about uncomfortable truths, sharing them with the public, as it used to be done in ancient times. Talking about the issues that concern the humankind today means to deal with an ever-changing reality and its shifting laws. The commitment of our shows is to never judge or propose solutions to these issues, but to raise questions that grip the humankind from the dawn of times.
