SOL - The Project
The shocking beauty of the Himalayas is invisible to the eyes of the native population, who lose their sight because of the constant exposition to the UV radiation, that becomes blasting at these altitudes.
The 85% of the people, living in remotes areas between 3.500 mt and 6.000 mt high, suffers of eyes diseases, from cataract to blindness. Here, the UV radiation are less filtered, phenomenon amplified by the ozone hole.
Because of the alteration and the loss of sight, locals are forced to move in the cities with the risk of losing the cultural biodiversity.
Shades of Love is a non-profit organization founded in Germany by Jurgen Altmann, owner at Aroma Kaffee Bar in Munich.
During a journey on the Himalayas, Jurgen was impressed by the multitude of men, women and kids partially sighted or blind, with milky and swollen eyes. Back in Germany, Jurgen had the idea to collect sunglasses at his coffee bar to give a fast reply to these people needs. He launched his first solidarity campaign between friends, relatives and clients.
Jurgen’s project, simple and easy, had a great impact and attracted many people interest, who started to send thousands and thousands of sunglasses.
- Shades of Love has distributed more than 460.000 sunglasses UV-400 and UV-350
- Together with the mobile clinic “The Tibetan Health Care Center” has assisted more than 200 people every day to allow them to get the surgery.
- Shades of Love is partner of Live to Love (http://www.livetolove.org/) to support the FREE EYE SURGERY CAMP in Ladakh region.
- In summer 2018, Shades of Love started the expeditions on Andes, from Chile to Peru, where the eye diseases are also very diffused.
Thus, was born the idea to realize a documentary to promote Shades of Love, a non-profit organization committed to improve the quality of life, the health and the future expectation of many people.
Our Dream Team!
Gaia Milani – Project Manager
28 years old, graduated in Economics with a Master in Marketing Management at Cattolica University of Milan. After several experiences in Italian and foreign companies, she decides that the life behind a desk is not worth for her. She moves to Philippines, where she works as project manager for a new resort, but the most touching experience is the collaboration with a non-profit organization to help street kids and people living below the poverty line.
Back in Italy she decides to combine her passion for humanitarian aid with her desire to explore new country and cultures and she creates this project.
Pietro Cremona and Tazio Nicoli – Video Production
29 and 30 years old, Tazio and Pietro are the experts of videomaking, post-production and motion graphics.
In 2014 they found Anthem Studio production company (https://vimeo.com/user34169015). Since then, they collaborate with different brands and agencies. In the last years they moved their focus on travel documentaries to tell stories of lives. They are finalizing a short-film on Burkina Faso culture and music.
We have done shootings in Monaco, at Shades of Love head quarter, and in Amsterdam to meet the co-founder Niklas Huppmann.
Our goal is to fly to Ladakh in August 2019, with Jurgen, Niklas and a team of people with a medical background. Here, Shades of Love will establish educational camps in each village to teach the people how to prevent eye diseases, and beside that, it will sponsor the free eye surgery camps in collaboration with (Name of the mobile clinic) and distribute sunglasses (with UV-400 filters) to the communities.
We would like to get closer to the native population to see the world from their eyes and to understand how the sight diseases change their perceptions and perspectives.
Why Is Your Help Important?
The support we will get from people and companies is precious to:
- Allow us to pay the trip expenses, flights and accomodation in the Himalayas
- Buy important video equipment
- Contribute to post-production phases
