What is it about?
ANTA is a non-profit organization that takes care of two overcrowded dog shelters located in the rural areas surrounding the towns of Castellaneta and Laterza - Apulia, Italy.
For decades, while local authorities have been consistently and proactively removing stray dogs from the streets of our towns, they fell short in taking care of the animals after they were captured; this resulted in inhumane living conditions for the sheltered dogs which continue to this day.
When ANTA volunteers were allowed for the very first time to enter those structures, they were shocked by what they saw, and wondered how those poor animals could survive in such awful conditions.
Dogs were hosted in small concrete cubicles, without any insulation from the soil - which would inevitably get frosted in winter and hot in summer; there was no proper roof to protect dogs from rain or sun, nor room to stretch their paws.
Today, thanks to the commitment, passion, and hard work of the ANTA volunteers, the quality of life of the local shelter dogs has definitely improved. We care about them deeply, and provide them with the love and care that they had most certainly forgotten.
Unfortunately, passion and good will can only do so much. Winter is almost upon us, and then a torrid summer will follow. These dogs need more than what we can currently offer.
Our finances have been stretched to the limit, and our individual contributions will not enough to provide for the two shelters anymore.
Are we asking for a miracle? Yes we are. But we believe that your generosity and good heart can make this happen.
How funds will be used
Our goal: purchase proper kennels to provide our friends with thermal insulations from concrete and soil; replace the roofs to shelter them from rain and sun; expand the fenced areas to allow them with more room to finally stretch their paws.
We do everything we can to take care of them, though we always wish we could do more. Despite all that, everyday our furry friends welcome us with warm hugs and wagging tails, to show us their love and appreciation for what we do.
Please help us make these dogs happy; they have already suffered enough in their life.
Who's behind the project?
ANTA is a non-profit organization who takes care of stray animals. Founded in Castellaneta, on the 11th of May 2004, ANTA fights everyday to protect mistreated and abandoned animals in a territory where stray dogs are the norm, and where local authorities simply ignore their duties in the matter.
Our volunteers work restlessly to assist sheltered and rescued dogs, neighborhood dogs, and several feral cat colonies.
Thanks to educational campaigns targeted to schools and younger citizens, we’re witnessing a cultural shift in our communities: more people, and especially families, are visiting the shelters for the first time, inquiring about the living conditions of the animals and offering to dedicate some of their time to participate in fundraising activities, or simply to walk some of our dogs.
Unfortunately, this is not enough. The shelters need structural maintenance and upgrades that can’t be carried on without proper funding.
Feel free to visit our Facebook page to learn about our initiatives; the one we’re most proud of? Our ongoing adoption campaign which allowed over 100 shelter dogs to find a new home this year alone!
ANTA says NO to cages, and believes that freedom is not a privilege reserved exclusively to human beings.
We want to call out and thank publicly three of our members for launching this campaign:
- Prof. Angela Stasolla: high school professor of Latin and ancient Greek, Angela is a role model when it comes to preserving the wildlife in our territory and fighting for better conditions for abandoned animals.
- Gabriele Di Pippa: high school student, in charge of web and tech ops
- Daniele Maldarizzi: photographer and film-maker.
